DON'T BE A PREY!

HIM: Oh, wow! You're a student. Where do you school?

ME: Lagos State University, currently.

HIM: Mashallah. So, what set do you belong to?

ME: I think 2020/2021 or 2021/2022. I'm not really sure.

HIM: (Smiles) I'm not talking about that kind of set. I mean, which Islamic sect do you belong to? Tijaniyyah, Islamiyyah, Modaniyyah, Ahmadiyyah, Sufi, Sujuribu, etc.?

ME: (With a bombastic side eye) Which one are you?

HIM: Tijaniyyah. So, I...

ME: (Cuts him short) Wait, wait, before you continue. When the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was alive, did he ever mention anything like, "My Ummah, this is the sect you should follow, because this is the path that leads to Al-Jannah?"

Did you ever see any verse of the Qur’an or hadith of the Prophet that says, "Dear Muslims, belong to a sect, bla bla bla?"

Did you ever see any verse of the Qur’an that promotes the issue of sects or Muslims segregating one another?

Mr. Man, DID YOU?!

HIM: Haaa, sister, you are being misguided o! How c... Cuts him short again

ME: Dey play! Brother, I’m sorry, but you met the wrong person. In fact, it’s like you didn’t take the time to study me AT ALL before you called me, because if you really knew me, you WOULD NOT BE ASKING THESE QUESTIONS OR TALKING ABOUT THESE STUFF. YOU JUST WON'T NI O!

I don’t know about you or whatever ideology you are housing in your head, but let me remind you of the verses of the Qur’an that talk about sects. In Surah Al-An’am (6:159), Allah says:

"Indeed, those who have divided their religion and become sects – you, [O Muhammad], are not [associated] with them in anything. Their affair is only [left] to Allah; then He will inform them about what they used to do."

This verse warns against division in the religion and emphasizes that those who create sects ARE NOT AMONG the Ummah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

In Surah Ar-Rum (30:32), Allah says:

"Do NOT be of those who have divided their religion and become sects, every faction rejoicing in what it has."

Are you counting it? There’s a hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) where he said:

"The Jews split into seventy-one sects, and the Christians split into seventy-two sects. And my nation will split into seventy-three sects, all of them in the Fire except one."

The companions asked, “Who are they, O Messenger of Allah?”

He said, “Those who are upon what I and my companions are upon.”

(Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, and Abu Dawood)

HIM: Hmmmm, Sister Sakeenah, you are... Cuts him short again

ME: Not to be rude, but I will say it again, YOU MET THE WRONG PERSON, Akhy. I have no issues or personal grudge with you, but here’s a piece of advice: "GO BACK AND STUDY THE DEEN ALL OVER AGAIN, BECAUSE BELIEVE ME, YOU HAVE BEEN BAMBOOZLED, AND BOMBARDED WITH TOXIC AND WRONG INFORMATION FROM PEOPLE WHO ALSO NEED THE GUIDANCE OF ALLAH."

 May Allah continue to guide you, and may Allah grant you a sister who will understand you and bring you closer to HIM. 

HIM: (Looking Confused) Amin. 

P.S.: The short conversation above is NOT FICTIONAL, BUT A REAL-LIFE OCCURRENCE.

Dear YOU, especially the single Muslim sisters out there, it is high time you woke up from your slumber and started seeking knowledge about the Deen. It is high time you left your comfort zone in search of IDEAL KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE DEEN. 

It is high time you stopped carrying an EMPTY HEAD around, while still claiming TO BE a Muslim. It is high time you sacrificed many of your desires and turned back to Allah. It is high time you forfeit whatever pleasure you think this world is giving you, and turn back to Allah—shed tears and ask Him to guide you, because believe me, A LOT IS GOING ON. A LOT, MY DEAR SISTER. A LOT!

You may think YOU KNOW, but the very moment you start learning about the Deen, that’s when you will realize that YOU DON’T KNOW ANYTHING. GBA, YOU DON’T KNOW!

There is no perfect Muslim, no perfect human. Even Allah HIMSELF does not demand perfection from anyone. All He asks of YOU AND I is to STRIVE. STRIVE, STRIVE, AND KEEP STRIVING UNTIL WE BREATHE OUR LAST.

Believe me, it’s tough, and holding on to the principles and injunctions of Allah amidst the toxicity of the world we find ourselves in today may even get tougher by the day. But remember: "Your Lord, and my Lord, will NEVER burden YOU AND I beyond what we can bear." So, keep asking Allah to guide you, and never stop striving TO please Allah in all your endeavors, for without HIM, nothing can be attained.

May Allah continue to forgive our shortcomings, strengthen us in Iman, shield us from the fitnah of this world and the Hereafter, and grant us Al-Jannah Firdaus. Amin!
