HOME MADE SHARWAMA
Shawarma is a street food! π΄ Making it at home is definitely possible. Here's a simple recipe to get you started:
Ingredients:
- 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs, cut into thin strips π
- 1/4 cup olive oil π§
- 2 cloves garlic, minced π‘
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice π
- 1 teaspoon paprika ❗️
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin ❗️
- 1/2 teaspoon coriander ❗️
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional) ❗️
- Salt and black pepper, to taste ❗️
- 4-6 pita breads π
- Tzatziki sauce (store-bought or homemade) π€€
- Chopped veggies like tomatoes, onions, and parsley π₯
Instructions:
1️⃣ Marinate the chicken: In a large bowl, whisk together olive oil, garlic, lemon juice, paprika, cumin, coriander, cayenne pepper (if using), salt, and black pepper. Add the chicken strips and mix well to coat. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight. ⏰
2️⃣ Grill or cook the chicken: Preheat a grill or grill pan to medium-high heat. π₯ Remove the chicken from the marinade, letting any excess liquid drip off. Grill the chicken for 5-7 minutes per side, or until cooked through. Alternatively, cook the chicken in a skillet on the stovetop. π³
3️⃣ Warm the pita breads: Wrap the pita breads in foil and warm them in the oven at 350°F (180°C) for 5-7 minutes. π
4️⃣ Assemble the shawarma: Slice the cooked chicken into thin strips. Spread a layer of tzatziki sauce on each pita bread, followed by a few slices of chicken, some chopped veggies, and a sprinkle of sumac (if desired). π€€
5️⃣ Serve and enjoy: Serve the shawarma immediately, with additional tzatziki sauce and veggies on the side. π
Homemade Tzatziki Sauce (optional):
- 1 cup Greek yogurt πΏ
- 1/2 cup diced cucumber π₯
- 1/4 cup diced red onion π
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley πΏ
- 2 cloves garlic, minced π‘
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice π
- Salt and pepper, to taste ❗️
Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. ❄️
